Art discipline:
As an artist, Alec is best known for his satirical viewpoint and his situated practice which combines traditional methods of art production and aesthetics with ecological, social concerns and street performances. Like a modern-day gleaner, he contours the folds and cracks of our environment, cleaning and sweeping as he goes in a seemingly set of futile gestures.

Welsh Airs

For the Neukölln 48 festival, I have produced a playlist comprising songs and pieces of music with air in the title or theme. I have worked with the award-winning harpist, Bethan Griffiths to create a playlist of music to be ‘aired’ on the opening night of the festival and made available throughout the festival and beyond. Similar to some of my previous works, the piece is participative in that the playlist grew from an initial idea and is being added to by anyone who wants to contribute songs or pieces of music they know, related to air.

In this work I wish to create a reflective place – place of possibility - of escapism within the mind’s eye, to switch off from daily pressures which could include the pandemic lifestyle, where many around the world are feeling isolated and trapped within the same place.

So far the list has over fifty songs and pieces of music associated with air and the list is growing. The musical playlist includes covers from popular artists such as Shawn Mendes and Jordin Sparks and many more, with five pieces interpreted by Bethan on the harp to evoke Welsh Airs!
