Born in Athens, based in Berlin, Despina Kapetanaki works in the fields of theatre, dance and performance. Her work is defined by an especially dynamic and expressive body language. She develops her pieces following experimental and research-based working processes. The focus of her practice lies on the body not only as a moving entity, but most importantly, as a manifestation of our deeper beliefs and emotions. In this sense, she is researching a "poetic"body, one that expresses modern culture and its contemporary sociopolitical issues. She has a special interest in the performer-audience relationship, as well as in new media and their potential in creating fictive stage realities. She also creates performances and artistic interventions for the public space. She studied theatre and acting in Athens and she received further training in physical theatre in Dublin and in Denmark by Odin Theatre. Her work has been presented in venues such as the Uferstudios für zeitgenössichen Tanz in Berlin, English Theatre Berlin, Performing Arts Festival Berlin, Backloft Dublin and TV Control Center Athens.
