Echoes of Silence - an interactive experiment
Thekla Raestrup
30 June 2024 12:30–17:30
Come, be loud in church, as loud as you dare, and then listen to the echo of your creation. We are guided by curiosity: when can silence be experienced? Are silence and sound like shadow and light? Can one only be experienced through the absence of the other? In the Bethlehem Church on Richardplatz we will explore together. Here you will find: altar and pews, but also a variety of things that can be used to create intense noise and sounds. For a short amount of time, everyone can experiment: with drums and pipes, rattles and clappers, with the neighbour's annoying recorder, with a wooden spoon, with an instrument or simply with their own voice. Then we change abruptly to silence. For the same length of time, out ears listen to the reverberation. Does this silence simultaneously prepare the next wave of noise? We repeat, and after a few rounds, discuss our questions: Are there different types of silence, depending on what sound preceded it? Perhaps silence is something that casts the shadow of past sounds into the present moment. Or perhaps it is the preparer, the space creator for sound. Regardless, it is worth exploring. If only to be loud for once, really loud, in a place of silence.
