The neon sign displaying "Apparent Sensory Perception" alludes to cyberpunk author William Gibson's debut science fiction short story, Fragments of a Hologram Rose. In the story, Apparent Sensory Perceptions (ASPs) are an advanced technology that delivers artificially generated sensory experiences directly into the brain. The protagonist relies on these ASPs to find relaxation and sleep in a bleak, overstimulating world. By experiencing the pleasant sensory impressions of others, he momentarily escapes his own reality and immerses himself in an alternate perception.
