mixed-media installation, dimensions variable, 2025
Statement:
The 48 Stunden Neukölln 2025 Festival theme: WTF (What the Fact?) as an
exclamation of both wonder and confusion - a response to the never-ending
stream of information in our technological age.
Huss’ kinetic installation, CRASH, BURN, REBOOT, REPEAT investigates the rapid
fire of technological innovation coupled with the fluctuating relationship between
obsolete and operating digital interfaces. Outdated compact discs, crocheted
with networks of yarn are suspended from the ceiling. Low-tech fibrous materials
delete the functionality of high-tech hardware and mirror hypnotic patterns of
light that radiate as the installation spins in cloud-like formations. As the
boundaries between the physical world and digital space dissolve, the line
between factual reality and subjective perception is blurred.
The title, CRASH, BURN, REBOOT, REPEAT is a commentary on the cyclical nature
of technology. The first part, CRASH, BURN, refers to a sudden and complete
failure of digital media – servers plummeting into oblivion, data disappearing and
systems overloading. The second half, REBOOT, is uplifting and references the
reloading of computer systems. REPEAT is the reality that technology is always
expanding into new frontiers. Yet, it is exponentially impossible to absorb every
bombarding detail of information and common practice to - selectively sift, sort,
rewind, fast-forward and replay.
