28 June 2025 20:00–22:00
A collaboration between the Fincan Writing Café and the Fincan Ensemble for Improvised Music.
Deva (Indian deities) and Asuras (also deities who became demons) play their game with truth and lies.
They came into being together with all celestials, humans and animals, from the Asu, the breath of the creator Prajapati. When they were created, they were given the gift of truth and falsehood like all other creatures. Later, however, some of them are said to have discarded the truth and thus developed their demonic nature. Hotri (caller) and Utgari (singer), the two actors/singers in the opera, act as intermediaries between them and the humans. With humour and charm, they tell stories of the flat earth, of the 36 unknown righteous who are always there and without whose presence the world would fall to pieces, and of those who are still able to remain undeterred by the wafts of mist that emerge from the void of fruitless violence and vanish back into it.
This opera is a swan song, both to the possibilities of human cognition and to all those who claim that there are alternative facts.
