28 June 2025 22:30–23:30
An operatic performance by Aristoteles Chaitidis

a unique blend of performative and operatic elements
a combination of corporate energy and baroque music

short description
Two people, trapped in the routine of their everyday lives, perform the same meaningless tasks while sitting at their desk. Like Sisyphus, they labor through the same sequences of dull movements incessantly. Inside this hamster wheel, music breaks through the monotony of repetition as salvation and counterweight to the omnipotence of everyday life. As the relationship between the two individuals unfolds, the disruptive power of music clashes with their vow to conformity and corporate alignment. A soprano and a counter-tenor "narrate" this attempted escape.

artist statement
In this performance I attempt to create with simple means a sense of disruption within a kafkaesque working environment. The inclusion of semi-choreographed sequences and movements complements the distinctive physical work of opera singers and makes it visible in a new way. The strict delimitation within these sequences nevertheless conflicts with the physical demands of operatic singing (breathing and muscular support), which creates a rich field of tension. The correlation between singing and physical movement as well as the performative potential of Baroque music is at the center of Hamsterrad.

Music
The performance includes arias by G.F. Handel, G.B. Pergolesi, A. Vivaldi, H. Purcell, Porpora etc
