Cardboard boxes are no good as wells. They soften, dissolve and collapse. And yet in the ‘Fountains’ series, water gushes out of the porous shells of our globalised consumption.

Absurd monuments are created in artificially generated pictorial spaces: shipping cartons, carelessly piled on top of each other, are transformed into bubbling fountains in the centre of public spaces. Fragile constructions that could hardly bear the weight of the rain suddenly give off water.

This deliberate irritation is part of the concept. ‘Fountains’ plays with the boundary between the visible and the believable, between simulation and possibility. Which images of the future do we take at face value? When do we allow ourselves to be deceived - and why?

Biography

Moritz Frei

Moritz Frei studied fine art with Peter Piller at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and works in many artistic media: photography, video, text, installation, performance, sound and painting. He uses found objects, everyday objects, toys and food and works in a site-specific, sometimes participative and performative way. His work is characterised by a focus on details, taking up or allowing chance events as a starting point for work processes and research, as well as a humorous, often critical view of the everyday. In addition to his artistic projects, a few years ago he founded the publishing house berlinartbooks, with which he produces and publishes his own and other artists' books. Moritz Frei lives in Berlin.
