The collage series "Displacement" addresses the business of "furnished temporary housing," a concerning trend in the Berlin housing market that has increased in recent years. More and more regular apartments are being furnished and offered temporarily at inflated prices, making it increasingly difficult for people seeking a long-term home.
On the common portals for housing you can find a vast array of available (furnished) apartments in Berlin. It is easy to rent "stylish apartments," "cozy studios," and "trendy lofts" for days or months. The map view of these portals clearly shows the density of available apartments in our "hip" districts, with price tags almost overlapping.
With my collages, I aim to draw attention to this situation. In my neighborhood, I have personally witnessed how regular apartments, once rented out "normally," have been furnished by the landlords, and are now only offered temporarily.
The district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has now recognized the problem and plans at least to prohibit "furnished temporary housing" in the social protection areas. The goal is to rent these apartments again on a permanent basis using the rent control measures, thereby creating more affordable housing. Hopefully, this will be successful.

Biography

Stephanie Bock

Stephanie Bock explores urban structures in her art, usually in painting. Her theme is the dense development in large cities, the tight spaces where many people live together – combined with a focus on architectural structures as well as the colors of a city. With the series "Displacement," for the first time she created collages that address another aspect of urban life: the effects of "furnished temporary housing" on the Berlin housing market.
