Festival edition 2024
28. -30.6.2024
Theme: Urban Silence

This edition of the festival was a departure into new territory! Exciting collaborations were formed, new events were introduced, and a comprehensive educational programme was developed. With passion and commitment, the team worked with fantastic artists and new partners to put together an incredible special programme. Selected projects could be visited digitally for the first time in the Kunstmatrix, and all festival content and information about 48 Hours Neukölln was available in the Smart Walk app. In addition, the website was translated into another language (Turkish) and all important content is now also available online in German sign language. All of this was an important step towards more equitable participation for all people.

To help visitors find their way around the festival, we introduced two new formats in 2024: information stands and the festival guide!

Our information assistants were on hand to offer advice and assistance at six central locations in Neukölln. They gave personal recommendations and helped visitors navigate the wide range of offerings at 48 Hours Neukölln.

At the same time, we said goodbye to the classic overview map. With the festival guide, a 40-page A5 booklet, we offered you a completely new orientation experience. This guide brought together all events, tours and map sections in a compact format and quickly became an indispensable companion for anyone who wanted to experience the festival in all its diversity.

The festival theme, ‘Urban Silence,’ which at first glance seemed like a complete contradiction, quickly revealed its true multifaceted nature upon closer inspection. The tension between Berlin and Neukölln offered incredible possibilities for interpretation, and the artists once again surprised us with a wide variety of projects based on this very personal theme.

„SONDERBERUHINGUNG“

By Peter Behrbohm und Anton Steenbock
Location: throughout Neukölln

Under the alias @sonder.solutions, Peter Behrbohm and Anton Steenbock offered a means of conflict management in public spaces. With their intervention SONDERBERUHIGUNG, the two experts in grey warning suits optimised the auditory quality of life in the district. Their work at Hobrechtstraße 31 showed how ‘urban noise cancelling’ still worked by hand.

shut down

By Gunhild Kreuzer
Location: Körnerpark

Gunhild Kreuzer's art installation ‘stillgelegt’ (shut down) used escalator handrails as a symbol of urbanity to create a place of reflection and tranquillity in Körnerpark. The installation encouraged visitors to pause and reflect, raising questions about slowing down and the sustainable transformation of the city.

Iso-lated

By Ambra Rosedorne, Dennis Kopp, Fabian Buntrock, Julian Wilming und Mahir Duman
Location: Keller des Vollgutergemeinschaftsgarten

The video installation ‘Iso-liiert’ (Isolated) was a socially activist work that examined the concept of isolation and its consequences for society. The installation, which was funded by the Senate, was on display in the fermentation cellar of the KINDL complex and dealt with the various forms of marginalisation in our society.

Tilspil

By Initiative Marimuck
Location: Passage between Karl-Marx- and Richardstraße

Marimuck's installation Tilspil transformed a busy pedestrian passageway into an interactive playground. Visitors followed lines and lingered in circles that encouraged them to explore the geological layers beneath their feet. The project created a playful space that invited interaction and pause in the urban environment.

Inner voice of the voice

By Asaf Erdemli
Location: BerlinerBergBrauerei

The oversized cork sculpture ‘Inner Voice of the Voice’ by Asafer Demli, sponsored by the Senate, created a new public space. It invited us to reflect on the inseparable connection between the city's sound identity and our own inner silence, and to become aware of how urban sounds guide us through the urban space.

Recovery room

By Lea Radatz
Location: Lessinghöhe

Recovery room was a project that created a place of relaxation on Lessinghöhe, addressing noise and silence in urban spaces. It offered an inner, quiet retreat according to Lea's understanding, as well as an outer area for discussions and exchanges about the conditions for FLINTA* in public spaces.

Waiting 48 Times

By Natalia Roman
Location: Metro stations Rathaus Neukölln and Schönleinstraßen

The installation Waiting 48 Times by Natalia Irina Roman, funded by the Senate, addressed urban silence in the context of waiting. At the Rathaus Neukölln and Schönleinstraße underground stations, the project asked what people in Neukölln were waiting for and made the silence in these moments tangible.
