The title of the exhibition ‘CRITICAL ZONE’ refers to works by the philosopher and sociologist Bruno Latour. Latour draws attention to the consequences of the traditional separation of culture and nature and their ongoing interrelationships.
‘Mankind has never been modern’, he says, because humans have always remained ‘nature’. And plants, animals and even things have ‘culture’: everything in the universe consists of ‘actors’ who - albeit to varying degrees - have intentions and make decisions.
With ‘CRITICAL ZONE’, Latour refers to the thin layer of earth in which all life takes place. And he wonders whether we are in the process of destroying this thin layer.
The small exhibition ‘CRITICAL ZONE’ by Li Koelan and Paul Gisbertz in the Earth Museum invites you to look, feel, listen, discuss and reflect. Our zone is a small space in which hope is maintained. Everybody is welcome as an actor to play his/her part and animals are also welcome!
