URBAN NATION presents the international group exhibition “The Versus Project V” by the artist duo Layer Cake at the Satellite Gallery. In their collaborative works, Patrick Hartl and Christian Hundertmark (C100) question the unwritten graffiti rule of never painting over another graffiti writer’s work (“crossing”) unless it is an absolute provocation. Layer Cake deliberately practise crossing in their project. The duo begins a work of art on canvas, which is then passed on to the respective guest artist. The guest artist works on the painting, sends it back to Layer Cake and the process is repeated until the artwork is complete. Through this non-verbal collaborative process, works are created that are composed of the contributions of the participating artists, combining and highlighting their personal styles.

“Working on the Versus project is an experiment in uncompromising teamwork. The project has resulted in works that represent an expansion of artistic boundaries for us and our guest artists.” – Layer Cake

The Versus project brings together a mosaic of artists, from MadC to Rocco and His Brothers to Chaz Bojórquez and Shepard Fairey, united by a fervent passion for style writing, street art and graffiti. All bring their own style to the canvas, contributing to a diverse spectrum that blurs the lines between individual contribution and collective creation. These works are not just paintings; they are conversations, multi-layered dialogs that transcend geographical and artistic boundaries and embody a unique intersection between graffiti and contemporary art.

Biography

Layer Cake (Patrick Hartl und Christian Hundertmark aka C100)

Layer Cake is the artistic union of graffiti veterans Patrick Hartl and Christian Hundertmark (C100). Their friendship dates back to the early 1990s, when they met while painting S-Bahn trains in Munich. In 2015, they decided to join forces. The combination of Christian’s abstract graphic style and Patrick’s urban calligraphy style with graffiti tags creates multi-layered images.
