REFLECTIONS or the Deconstruction of the Binary

Maria Karamoutsiou, Natalie Giannopoulos

You and I. My space, your space, male or female, native or immigrant, art or education, state theater or independent scene... performer or audience. In most social encounters, binary thinking shapes collective and individual perceptions. What happens when we realize that we are trapped in the reflective prism of a dichotomous society? That perceptions of identity are shaped by this? What is this self then? What is real and what is not? Does the self consist only of reflections? Can I free myself from this reflective prism? If so, what remains?

REFLECTIONS, or the Deconstruction of the Binary, is a multimedia dance performance that explores the confrontation between self and world and reflects current intersectional feminist and queer-normative discourses. It is about depicting individual journeys and depicting a collective upheaval. It involves rethinking structures, exploring spaces, boundaries, and perceptions, and recognizing diversity in society. Because only when we stop understanding binary thinking as a reflection of reality can a metamorphosis and the new begin.

A video installation of Reflections will also be shown in the window of the Polymedialer Ponyhof.
