Unmarried Woman

The exhibition ‘Unmarried/Unmastered’ features a series of oil paintings she has been working
over the past two years, which explores the fascination with the negative connotations of the
term “unmarried woman” and gives the title a new meaning by showing women in their various
forms of self-empowerment. The women depicted play cherished roles in the local community,
in music, art, sports and dance – celebrating the many faces of Berlin creatives.
The paintings shown are based on the work of various photographers, who are credited
underneath. These photographers stand out as active members in the community; they were
chosen for capturing the models in moments of power or indifference. This offers a refreshing
departure from the traditional ‘male gaze’ found in historic oil painting. This diversion from the
lineage of the ‘Old Masters’ is reflected in the title of the exhibition, as well as being a nod to the
artist’s self-taught practice. The title is also a reference to the artist’s favourite Kendrick Lamar
album.

Biography
Unmarried Woman
Unmarried Woman is a self-taught oil painter from the UK, living in Berlin, with a particular
interest in portrait painting. Outside of her identity as an artist, she works as an architect and
a DJ under the name “Unmarried Woman” – roles which have tied into the inspiration for this
collection of portraits.
