When waste land in the city is left to its own devices, pioneer plants conquer the area and prepare the ground for an increasingly diverse vegetation. The resulting vegetation develops in a completely different way to what we are used to from carefully designed green spaces – such as here at Schloss Britz.
In both cases, nature offers stressed inhabitants of an urban environment space for peace and contemplation.
At the same time, this vegetation allows us to sense the history of these urban spaces. A green space that can be traced back to an abandoned cemetery develops differently fron the vegetation on the former border strip or in a feudally planned park.
Trees as silent witnesses to history
