Democratic participation is a fundamental right in Germany. The civil conflict over current issues is almost unbearable. There is not just a static right or wrong, because the more diverse and post-colonial Germany becomes, the more language, for example, must be seen in context.

“ S o S - Sound of Stille” addresses the current debate on freedom of art/speech. Exhibitions are rightly, but also wrongly, canceled. Are public museums and cultural institutions not bound by the law? Why can uncomfortable voices, different opinions or views that do not conform to the current narrative simply be canceled under the guise of breaking the Basic Law? Who is the neutral supervisory authority for this? The Federal Constitutional Court. It decides on the basis of the German Basic Law. The silence is becoming more and more oppressive, opinions and attitudes are falling silent. It‘s getting quieter in Berlin, an uncomfortable urban silence is spreading.

As abstract collages, an original technique of visual art, these voices hang quietly and harmoniously on an exhibition wall. The visualization of the missing perspectives leaves a pale aftertaste. Artists whose artistic projects were canceled (without having broken the Basic Law) say their names. This audio file is designed as a collage of white paper and the colors of the purple line. The silenced voices are being raised: A joint call for help for artistic freedom.

Biography

Mareike Strelitz

Collage is a unique way of merging time and space. Since the Big Bang, there has been no time without space and no space without time. Forms meet, again and again and yet differently each time. Mareike Strelitz (-/-) conceives, designs and photographs analog collages from printed and colored papers, mainly from old fashion magazines. Influenced by her work on supposedly socially relevant topics from the communications industry, the collages are based on a calm but demanding view of the various challenges of our time.
