Folksongs revisited
Barbara Jungfer - electric guitar, loops, effects
Anuka Kontridze - tabla
The gaze shifts from here to the distance and back again, genre boundaries blur and new perspectives on the familiar emerge:
In duo with Georgian tabla player Anuka Kontridze jazz guitarist and composer Barbara Jungfer explores German folk songs. Arranged with jazzy harmonies, modulated by electronic effects and underpinned with non-European grooves, the familiar melodies are being clothed in new, vibrant garments and set to dance, while others sound lyrical and meditative.
The guitarist also performs some of her own compositions which are inspired by folklore and sometimes reminiscent of alphorn echoes, Bavarian folk dances or Balkan songs, skillfully illuminating the folk song theme from a different angle.
The duo bridges the past and present, blending traditional songs with postmodernism and simultaneously weaving together the music of various cultures. Apparent contradictions are resolved. In an improvisational dialogue, they explore new sonic spaces, taking the audience on an exciting and richly resonant journey.
