Into the 404

Into the 404 is a musical project formed by Anthony and Julian in an apartment in Berlin in 2020. We create real-time, live improvised soundscapes using found sounds, samples, synthesizers and programmed drum machines.

This musical project explores the relationships between the musicians, the listeners and the city. We take all types of sounds from the elegant and beautiful to the strange, unfamiliar and uncomfortable and probe how they could fit together. Rather than shut out and ignore the uncomfortable sounds and moments, we hold onto them and examine them, arrange them and explore the possibility within them. Into the 404 finds a home among the chaos.

This is also a project about exploring the relationships between the musicians. We create a musical conversation in real time through the interaction of frequencies, textures, timbres and tonality. Each musician has their own electronic setup consisting of a handful of machines. Sounds are introduced and removed in response to each other’s sounds with the intention of taking the music to the next place.

Improvisation also allows us to immediately respond to the stimuli around us--the sounds of the street, the weather, as well as the energy and emotion of the audience.

For the 48 hours of Neukölln we will create a special 2-hour performance built from sounds captured throughout Neukölln and incorporate them into our improvisations. These will include sounds that anyone wandering the streets of Neukölln will find immediately recognizable and mix them with synthesizers to create and examine how the soundtrack of the streets create and impact the emotional experience of daily life in Berlin.
