contrasting realities

Hanna Fokken, Laura Korrmann, Julian Dieckert

Is there such a thing as one reality?

Every space of experience borders on infinite realities which, although they share the same frame of reference, can differ radically from one another. The same spaces can have completely different meanings depending on the temporal and spatial perspective from which they are viewed. One and the same space can be a refuge and a threat; memory and loss; a place of longing and a border.

The exhibition is dedicated to precisely this coexistence of contradictory realities. It examines, by way of example, how resilience, resistance, and community are shaped by a collective consciousness of memory. How do we deal with places whose meaning is not fixed, but constantly shifts, overlaps, and dissolves? Water, in its complex and fluid form, serves as the connecting element of the exhibition.

The works of the participating artists reveal how spatial and political boundaries separate these worlds of experience from one another and how arbitrary the distribution of security, freedom, risk, or hope can ultimately be. It encourages us to reflect on our own attitude within the fabric of global realities and thus also highlights the privileged situation in which we find ourselves.

Art can open up an important avenue here. Even difficult topics such as injustice should be made accessible to a broad audience in as low-threshold a manner as possible. The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on the plurality of realities and to embrace their complexity. It aims to make distant realities tangible, make boundaries more permeable, and create spaces for encounter. It invites us to mourn a place we ourselves have never lost. To understand the complexity of human experience. But also to appreciate the endurance and resilience of valuable ideas.
