Since 2022, the collective Clean Plate Society has been collecting the calls and songs of food market vendors, questioning their codes and practices across time and space and exploring the role of dialects, accents and immigrant voices in shaping languages.

As the soundscape of the “Souk” is threatened by gentrification and the devaluation of urban sounds as cultural or legislative nuisances, the project Souk Machine aims to recreate a universal market by bringing together the chants, rhythms and languages in sonic and occasionally visual creations.

We’ve always heard them, but now it’s time to listen.
