„Soundless Forms: Mapping the Underworld" emerges as a captivating art installation, born from the collaboration of Latin American artists Lena Becerra and Aquiles Jarrin, both of whom have their studios in Neukölln.
Curated by Raisa Desypri, this amalgamation of visual and sculpture installations seeks to articulate the ethereal soundscape that saturates the subterranean depths of Berlin. Functioning as a conceptual translation of an auditory terrain clandestinely concealed beneath the urban symphony resonating on the surface, it unveils an unseen world of sonic dimensions.
Each facet of this installation materializes through a deliberate selection of sound recordings amassed over the preceding year around Neukölln, attempting to intersect the diverse reality of the area. From the resonant echoes of pipes and aqueducts to the intricate rhythms of insects, roots, and animals inhabiting Berlin—a city often likened to a swamp that densely traps a wealth of vitality—the works offer a nuanced visual and sensory exploration of a sonic realm often relegated to the recesses of our everyday consciousness.
The show invites us to contemplate of the acoustic opulence latent beneath the urban veneer, revealing a concealed sonic dimension amidst the everyday tumult. It deliberately incorporates negative spaces and voids, creating an immersive experience that underscores the paradox of overlooked silence within the pulsating urban tapestry. These voids, both visual and auditory, serve as a powerful metaphor and inviting viewers to introspectively engage with the often-neglected aspects of the city they inhabit.
The installations are presented in the basement of TORTE in Sonnenalle, a bar turned cultural space. By descending underground the audience is invited to the artists’ underworld where they attempt to encapsulate the unique essence of a subway symphony, transforming voids into spaces rich with unspoken narratives.
