As a textile designer in a home textile weaving industry, I'm constantly dealing with the interplay of "outside/inside," because textiles define the boundary between the interior, the private sphere, and the exterior, creating a protective barrier against privacy.
As a textile artist, I can, as I did last year, isolate the fabrics as artworks and present them in nature, thus dissolving the boundaries and allowing the textiles to develop a life of their own.
For my first idea, I created a realistic chain-link fence in front of a moss-covered piece of corrugated cardboard, which opens up towards the top. I used woolly bouclé yarn for the moss, which is replaced by transparent yarns as the piece rises. Hanging freely in nature, the trees and houses surrounding the Prinzessinnengärten (Princess Gardens) will be visible through the top; the boundaries are open.
As a textile designer, I'm always interested in patterns. My next idea was inspired by skyscrapers in New York, from whose window fronts I created an intriguing pattern that, with different fillings, can be transformed into ever-new designs. Various versions were woven on transparent and dense warp threads, which I plan to use to create a kind of abstract skyline.
My third work is derived from photographs of an art installation in New York. Mirrored and gold surfaces were hung in a plaza in such a way that photographs of them created a confusing interplay of reflections of real nature and pavement.
For this fabric, I layered different patterns: the paving stones, the openings, the trees, and the gold surfaces. I realized this again on a dense warp thread (with woven-in branches) and on a transparent quality, with see-through sections.
The next idea is based on photographs of cracked train windows through which the landscape behind them passes. The windows are created with transparent yarn.
Further ideas: A physically disintegrating fabric, a "soccer game" where the ball is sometimes out, sideways, or inside...

Biography

Vivian Christlein

I am a graduate textile designer and have worked in the textile industry at a Jacquard weaving mill since 1992.

Since 2011, I have used the theme of the 48hNeukölln festival as inspiration to express myself through textiles. The Jacquard machines are my tools, and I am grateful to my company, where I have worked for 26 years, for giving me the freedom to pursue my ideas.

For this festival, I create unique pieces over a period of about six months.

My intention is to follow my curiosity—as a designer, to explore patterns; as a weaving technician, to delve into constructions; and as an artist, to find my own unique expression.
