In this self-reflexive work, I address the pain I have suffered for years and which governs my life. From the outside, it is invisible to others and cannot be seen. Inside, it is always there: either the actual pains or a dull ache from the painkillers.
The photographs show where the pain lies. A naked back, the pelvis, and the buttocks. Is it painful or aesthetic?
The images reveal the contradiction: the inner pains hold the power, but from the outside they are invisible. The medications regulate and mask the pain — and in the artwork they accompany the naked back in the photos.

Biography
Florence Arnold
The artist works here under a pseudonym. For several years she has been ill, suffering from severe back pain that sometimes tears her life apart completely. Random pain and the shame of being ill, and of falling out of work and society, have shaped her life since then. The photographs reflect this dissonance: the powerlessness before the illness is shown through nudity, while the pain behind it and the shame remain invisible.
