To those born later

The installation/sculpture "An die Nachgeborenen" can be seen in Chris Dietzel's studio. The title is a reference to Berthold Brecht's poem: "To those born after." (1934-1938) Even if Brecht is referring to the time in Nazi Germany, it is generally about how we humans treat each other and when we raise our voices against injustice and breaking the silence. The silence of poverty and loneliness, the silence of illness or exclusion. The sculpture confronts us with all these aspects that we often want to keep away from. The work deals primarily with the issue of increasing homelessness in cities. The cityscape is filled with people living on the streets, sleeping on sidewalks in the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a silence in two senses. On the one hand, our silence, the gaze that only briefly touches the people on the ground. No exchange, silence between us, the image is familiar. On the other hand, the people radiate a different kind of silence through their apparent slowness and lack of activity. The hustle and bustle of the people who are "functioning" is strangely interrupted by people without shelter.
