The series “Permeable City” is based on my long-standing theme of urban landscapes. While I usually work with real places, here I have focused on utopian urban structures.
Painting is combined with collage—building elements cut out from magazines. Buildings from different countries and eras come together to form a new city, fitting harmoniously alongside one another. A kind of cultural permeability emerges: the buildings suggest the diversity of the inhabitants living there together. People have brought their houses from their original homelands into this new city. National borders dissolve, and the new city cannot be assigned to any specific geographic region or country.
Alongside the new composition of building volumes, façades, and windows, interior and exterior spaces also merge. The view out of the window alternates with the view of the windows themselves, making it unclear whether one is inside or outside.
To bring each of these cityscapes together as a unified whole, every city has its own distinctive underlying color tone.

Biography
Stephanie Bock
Stephanie Bock deals in her paintings with (real) urban structures of cities from all over the world. The theme is the dense development, the limited space in which many people live together – combined with a focus on forms and structures as well as the individual color character of a city. With the series “Permeable City,” created for the festival theme OUT/SIDE/IN, she produced utopian city views for the first time.
