Cassandra by Christa Wolf – A series of paintings tells the story of the border crosser who, despite – or perhaps because of – her predictions and sharp analyses, was so deeply despised and punished with disbelief by her fellow humans during the Trojan War.

Christa Wolf's reworking of the ancient myth weaves together numerous questions about social boundaries, the inside and the outside, ingroups and outgroups, constantly linked to the othering of the stranger.

Is Cassandra part of the royal family, even though she dares to rebel against the royal structures?
Is she part of the Trojan people, even though she reflects the truth about their weaknesses and misjudgments back to them?
Is she a real woman, even though she resists the violent advances of men?

Caught between two stools her entire life, Cassandra begins to accept her position on the sidelines as a formative and central part of her self. She fights to regain her voice and seeks out third places beyond the binaries of war and the world in order to feel alive despite the circumstances.

The painting cycle is a subjective interpretation of numerous themes and passages from the narrative. It takes up Christa Wolf's “old” analyses and poses them as “new” questions to the present.

Biography

Malte Hein

Malte Hein lives and works in Berlin Schöneberg.

With his oil and acrylic paintings, he attempts to delve into the social and political zeitgeist and reveal how people interact with each other and the world.

His works are interspersed with symbols and abstract or fantastical landscapes in which he embeds his figures.

His often dreamlike paintings deal with the vague search for something greater than ourselves, without revealing exactly what that might be or whether it even exists.

Malte Hein regularly invites visitors to his studio in the Kulturhaus Schöneberg for open studio days and other events.
