The largest metropolitan region on the African continent is brought to life by over 20 million people. Since its foundation in the 10th century, Cairo has been expanded layer by layer to become a megacity. Depending on the district, houses grow either criss-crossed or neatly arranged behind guarded walls. The question "What is Cairo?" has as many answers as it has inhabitants. But won't they all confirm that it's never quiet in this corner of the world?

Artist and curator Céline Pilch has invited four creative minds from Cairo to capture their relationship to the sound of the city in pictures and words. "Layers of Cairo" shows what "Urban Silence" means to them.
