Threshold
Paul Gallagher

I constructed this threshold to bridge many things.
Working as a carpenter in Manchester, this structure spans the gap between my life now and the art collectives and exhibition spaces I once called home in Berlin. It is the manifestation of a transition; in part inspired by a journey I made in 2020. Cycling with two friends from Berlin to Rostock, I decided to continue alone to Copenhagen.
A day later, I was battling the wind and my own anxiety crossing over a long, steel bridge high above the Baltic Sea. On the other side I met a mentor. He told me I had made the right choice to continue. “When you leave this town”, he said “the wind which has been slowing you down will get behind you and push you all the way up to Copenhagen”.
Now, that idea of a Bridge has evolved into something simpler. A crossing, a gate, a Schwelle. It represents the act of choosing the future and the weight that entails.
It stands open; everyone and anyone may now pass through, bringing their own inner and outer worlds to bear on it.

Paul Gallagher
Paul Gallagher (b. 1995, Manchester) is an artist whose work combines narratives with structural design.
He studied at The Glasgow School of Art (BA Fine Art Painting 2014-18) and Helsinki University of the Arts (2016). Subsequently, Gallagher spent 5 years in Berlin as a self-initiated artist journeyman. Working with Michael Müller Studio, KW Institute, Fine Art Service and was a member of KAPiTAL and Treptow Ateliers.
He now builds bespoke furniture alongside his art practice, and collaborates with fabricators M3 Industries.
