Are there gestures reserved for a specific gender? Are there gender-free gestures? Are there appropriate, or moreover inappropriate gestures attached to a gender type?
SIGNALS, a project by _.mootpoint, is a site-specific performance in augmented reality space inspired by tabooed female gestures. The aim is to deconstruct and reconstruct these gestures in order to address gender inequality and patriarchal structures. Taboo gestures from different cultures serve as the starting point for choreographies in an XR space, fused with sound and virtual reality. As our perception is transforming alongside the physical space transformation, each gesture can be put under question after being seen under an alternative context.
