Are there gestures reserved for a specific gender? Are there gender-free gestures? Are there appropriate, or moreover inappropriate gestures attached to a gender type?
SIGNALS, a project by _.mootpoint, is a site-specific performance in augmented reality space inspired by tabooed female gestures. The aim is to deconstruct and reconstruct these gestures in order to address gender inequality and patriarchal structures. Taboo gestures from different cultures serve as the starting point for choreographies in an XR space, fused with sound and virtual reality. As our perception is transforming alongside the physical space transformation, each gesture can be put under question after being seen under an alternative context.

_.mootpoint is a Berlin-based collective founded in 2019 by Fanis Gioles (sound, programming, performance), Anthoula Bourna (stage design and visuals) and Anna Syrianou (stage design, visuals, management). Their work focuses on themes related to society, gender, body, memory and identity. They pursue an interdisciplinary practice that encompasses art production, curating and cultural management. Their projects include performative elements, sound design, augmented realities and visual art. For the SIGNALS project, they collaborate with Berlin-based dancer/choreographer Ageliki Gouvi and media programmer Mamady Wegat.
