Almost 18 million Germans are affected by a mental illness every year. Mental difficulties are often associated with a great deal of shame and those affected often face prejudice - yet there is a high probability that we could all be affected ourselves in the course of our lives.
People in big cities like Berlin have a higher risk of developing mental health difficulties, as living in big cities puts more strain on the psyche. Last but not least, the stigmatisation of mental illness leads to the social marginalisation of those affected. The multimedia exhibition "Silent Voices Loud" aims to change this and therefore gives a "voice" to artists affected by mental difficulties.
Interested visitors can see works from art therapy - and experience how they were created.
The artworks vividly bear witness to the inner life of artists and how they have dealt with it with the support of a trained art therapist in order to recover. The works are accompanied by texts to read and listen to, with the artists themselves having their say. The information is accessible via QR codes using a smartphone. The image descriptions can be called up in different languages.

Biography

The artists would like to stay anonymous.

In the exhibition, participants of art therapy-led group and individual sessions and self support groups in Berlin present their work. Through texts and audio files, which can be accessed via QR codes on a smartphone, the artists themselves have their say and describe their psychological experiences, their everyday life in the metropolis of Berlin and what helps them to recover.

The organisers of the exhibition, Dr Ina Keggenhoff and Magdalena Riedlberger, are artists and clinical art therapists. Both founded the ART THERAPY COLLECTIVE in 2023, which aims to contribute to the empowerment of people with mental difficulties and its destigmatisation.
