Urban silence, remaining silent in a group is not intended in a capitalist society. In this soundwalk “Drawing-Walking” new experiences of community can be made that are not primarily defined by language. It is an invitation to go on an aimless and silent hike with previously unknown people, in which we concentrate on listening to the soundscapes of urban space and their resonance in our own inner life.
It is also a reflection of the use of public space and the encounter between the silent group and the passers-by in Neukölln. Through conscious misuse, the relationship between public space and its sound world will be actively changed.

Course of this walking: After a short introduction to the process for the group, we will stroll together in silence through the public space of Neukölln. Every 10 minutes, we will stop and do a 1-minute drawing. So we alternately observe the outside through hearing and the inside, our own inner echo, through drawing. There is a new connection between the soundscapes of urban space and our physical response to them. The next route is alternately determined by another group member until the next drawing break.

In this way, the group follows the curiosity of the hearings of the respective hikers. The entire hike takes 2 hours and is suitable for a maximum of 8 participants. Finally, we go to the nearest park for a short, final exchange about our own experiences. To what extent do we, as silent observers, become part of our environment? How do we physically and psychologically relate to our surroundings? And how do the soundscapes of the places influence our inner life?

I ask you to register briefly with the desired time of the hike by email at khippen@gmx.de. If you have, please also bring a clipboard or drawing pad, paper, pens, and something to drink. The meeting point for the hike is the Hasenheide at the entrance gate to the Volkspark Naturtheater.

Biography

Kathrin Hippen

Kathrin Hippen works in participatory installations with sound, drawing, and sculpture.
Social coexistence and dealing with emotions in a capitalist society are the central starting points of my artistic work. I see these as experimental stations in which the connection between body awareness and emotional expression is examined. I include the behavior of the viewers within the installations in my research into the influence of digital communication on our relationship with ourselves and others in public spaces. I see the emphasis on physical consciousness in a digitalized world as an emancipation from neoliberalist conventions within communication.
