In the piece 4’33, John Cage asked the audience to listen actively, that is, to listen to the sounds of the environment: noises, atmospheres and even noise. The listeners became aware that there is no silence: every room is filled with the sounds that inhabit it, pervade it, enliven it. Conversely, if we were to stay in a soundproofed room where all contact with the outside world is prevented, we would be forced to deal directly with our thoughts and feelings. The more we live in an environment of overlapping stimuli, the easier it is for us not to come into contact with ourselves. As paradoxical as it sounds, we can hardly stand the silence anymore and at the same time we seek it.
I sense this ambivalence in my work to silence.

Biography

Silke Panknin

An essential focus of my work is the engagement with places, especially with natural spaces, whose specific character I try to capture through cultural, historical or geological processes. My artistic medium is analogue photography, often in conjunction with a temporary ’sculptural’ intervention.
Accompanying the intervention, photographs are created that go beyond the documentary and represent independent works. The analogue way of working with the camera and later in the darkroom ties in with my way of working on site.
