Sometimes boundlessness begins with a small act of letting go.

The photographic works of this project emerge at the threshold between control and chance. Their starting point is analog film — a medium traditionally associated with precision, planning, and technical mastery. In this process, however, that order is deliberately disrupted: before being exposed, the film is soaked in various liquids and only used after drying. These interventions alter the film’s surface and unfold unpredictable chemical reactions: colors bleed, structures emerge, and forms begin to dissolve.

What may initially seem like interference, or even destruction, opens a space of possibilities. The resulting images move beyond their original legibility and evolve into poetic visual landscapes. Familiar motifs shift into abstraction; contours blur and colors take on a life of their own. Each photograph becomes a singular event shaped by the encounter between captured moment, material transformation, and chance.

The works operate within the tension between inside and outside: between the moment that was photographed in the outer world and the uncontrollable processes that take place within the material itself. From a fragment of the visible world emerges an image space between representation and transformation, between memory and imagination, between reality and dream.

At the core of the project lies an exploration of boundaries. Freedom begins where limits imposed from within and without — beliefs, expectations, rules, and routines — are questioned and reimagined.

By transferring this principle to the photographic material itself, the works invite viewers to embrace imperfection as part of the process and to give space to the unpredictable. In this encounter between chance and intention, boundlessness appears as a quiet, poetic state — a moment in which control and openness begin to dance, and images emerge that resist fixed meaning and open space for imagination.

Biography

cyn.namonroll

Cyn (*1990, near Braunschweig) developed a passion for photography early on. After experimenting with both analog and especially digital photography—particularly long-exposure work—she eventually returned to analog processes. She discovered a technique known as “filmsoup,” where film is soaked in liquids before being exposed, causing chemical alterations. The unpredictable reactions create flowing colors and organic forms. Her work invites viewers to step outside the routines of everyday life and surrender to imagination. For the artist, photography has always been a way to break away from the ordinary. In her day job, she works with adults, helping them overcome emotional hurdles.
Following a small first exhibition in 2012, this marks the artist’s first major exhibition.
