In the middle of a restless city, quiet places cast a spell over us. Poetry sometimes only reveals itself for a brief moment. But the perception of this silence demands all the senses. The absence of noise unfolds its own presence, which manifests itself not only in the images: A new language develops in the silence. The language of the architecture, the wasteland, the empty streets and playgrounds. A language that speaks of exhaustion and expectations.

‘Zwei Sekunden’ raises questions: How do we find our way around the city when the expected acoustic signposts are missing? Gringmuth's photographs show the longing for silence as an unattainable ideal. Photography itself becomes a medium for seeing, feeling and hearing silence. The visibility of silence reveals a city that tells its own unique story in the excess of silence.

Biography

Götz Gringmuth-Dallmer

Götz Gringmuth-Dallmer, born on 11 January 1969 and raised in Berlin-Mitte, is a journalist and photographer.

His first camera was a 6x6 roll film camera, a present from his father for his 12th birthday. He had barely come of age when he invested the money he was earning as a locksmith in an SLR camera. He converted the bathroom of his first flat into a darkroom and photographed bands at concerts when he wasn't on stage playing guitar.

In the last 15 years, Götz Gringmuth-Dallmer has specialised in urban photography. He is fascinated by the rare moments of emptiness in the centre of the city. The search for this runs through his work.
