Food knows no border, whether a recipe is created through Independent Invention or Cultural Diffusion it is easy to see similarities between the foods the people of a given region eat. Germany shares a land border with nine countries, and most of them claim similar yet unique recipes. Frikadeller, FleischLaibchen, Klopsiki, Smažené Karbanátky, Frikadellen, Gehaktballen, Boulets à la Liégeoise, Boules de Picolat, Köttbullar; by another name Meatballs.

‘A Nonet of Meatballs’ is a still life composed of the necessary ingredients to make Meatballs from eight of the nine bordering countries including Germany; although I failed to identify a unique version from Luxembourg. While each recipe yields a unique flavor, at their core they tend to be more similar than different. And just like our recipes we too tend to be more similar than we are different.

At 70cm x 80cm ‘A Nonet of Meatballs’ is the 6th installment in a series of oil paintings composed of the ingredients used to make a recipe.

Biography

Jordan Griffin

Jordan Griffin is a California-born artist currently based in Berlin. They developed their skills and techniques at Modesto Junior College and San Francisco State University, working primarily in oil paint and charcoal. Their current focus in the studio has been on a series of still lives that examines the pieces that make a recipe whole.

Recipes is an ongoing series of still life paintings that examines a meal through its components, because a well crafted meal is not just sustenance but an experience. And like a meal is made from multiple different ingredients so is a community made of different types of people.
