The painting practice of Anaïs Héraud and Ana Daase plays with different kinds of boundaries: between individuals, artistic identities, actions and reactions, as well as between distinct visual languages. The two artists paint together, simultaneously, on the same canvases. In doing so, they explore the dissolving and shifting of intersubjective lines of separation and the resonances that emerge within the image. Subjectivity is always the result of different experiences, contexts, and structures—the boundary between inside and outside remains permeable.
Their collaborative paintings usually develop without prior agreement or composition. The nonverbal negotiation on the canvas brings forth dreamlike images that elude conscious authorship. Two unconscious processes overlap here, and the creative act does not search for meaning but allows the images to take on a life of their own. What is one’s own can become foreign, and what is foreign can become one’s own. There are moments when the artists consciously step back, make decisions, and the image transforms into a fragmented whole. Viewers, in turn, can (de)construct boundaries anew, rearrange fragments, or break apart seemingly unified forms.

Biography
Anaïs Héraud + Ana Daase
Anaïs Héraud-Louisadat (b. 1988, Strasbourg) and Ana Valeska Daase (b. 1983, Frankfurt am Main) are both visual artists and art therapists based in Berlin. Héraud’s work focuses on painting and performance art, while Daase primarily works with figurative painting and linocut. Both are interested in the artistic exploration of subjective constructions of reality—at the intersections of art, philosophy, and psychology.
Both artists are committed to supporting (young) people interested in art by offering workshops that provide an introduction on developing their own creative processes.
