Between expectations, role models, and the demand for performance, identities shift. Some almost imperceptibly, others radically. What remains is a fragile balance between outward adaptation and the attempt not to lose oneself entirely.
The Panther Cycle deals with the transitions between external adaptation and inner rebellion. The work is based on the poem Der Panther by Rainer Maria Rilke, which addresses the external and internal captivity of a confined predator. Three stanzas, three oil paintings.
The subject matter in the paintings oscillates between states of paralysis and quiet, tentative resistance. Restriction on the outside leads to the slipping away of one’s own identity and culminates in physical dissolution.
The paintings invite the viewer to enter the irrational space beneath the visible surface and to explore the moment before movement, before collapse.
