stillgelegt / shut down
Intervention with handrails from two former escalators from the Gesundbrunnen shopping centre

The handrails are assembled to form a sculptural landscape and rise out of the urban space as a blank black wave.

Escalators are a feature of urbanity, as they are usually only found in places with a lot of public traffic.
In the intervention "stillgelegt", the handrails of a former escalator become a sculpture (landscape) on which visitors can stand.
They form an island in the urban space where visitors can pause and reflect. What does it feel like when movement stops, the city holds its breath and silence sets in?
What visions emerge from this stillness for the city and for living together?

The recycled handrails epitomise sustainability and at the same time raise the question of transformation. How can the city be built, remodelled and decelerated sustainably?
