The Körnerpark is an otherworldly enclave in bustling Neukölln: descending into the green oasis is like walking into a surprisingly quiet valley, 70 meters below the urban soundscape. A former gravel pit, it was turned into a park in 1907 and at its construction, the remains of a warrior and his horse from the 7th century were found. Later when the park was in Tempelhof’s flight path, it became neglected and rundown space before the airport closed and the scene was revived. Layers of history form the silent stories that lie beneath this present. Today, large trees and water line a long stretch of grass bracketed by the Orangerie and fountains on either side. Across the lawn hangs a ten meter abstract on free floating canvas that picks up on the interplay between light, greenery, water and sky in its color scheme. An altar to silence in the city, the art work blends into the environment, extending into the peaceful vibe of the place, rather than disrupting it. Camouflage as a visual tactic features as a form of silence. The hanging canvas interacts with the surrounding elements, relaxed rather than stretched onto a frame, embodying the idea of silence as a meditative flow between the viewer and the park. Step into a fusion of abstract visual art and motion, as two performers embark upon a kinetic journey into the urban sound-wave, echoing the painting’s representation of sound and its absence. The dancers attune themselves to the art work and the ebb and flow of the city, embodying the contrast between silence and urban (com-)motion. Experience the multisensory exploration of this delicate balance as the performers delve into the interplay between stillness and noise, the internal and external, reflection and chaos. Performance times are on June 29th and 30th at 15:00 and 17:00 in the Park. The canvas installation is accessible all weekend.

Biography

Sophia Frese, Anouk van der Voet, Jenny Helene Wübbe

Sophia Frese is a Berlin artist, who crossed over from the humanities into the visual arts. Her large abstracts are psychographies that use color and light as actors on an atmospheric stage. Rich and vibrant, her work riffs on literary and musical influences, exploring the interstice of cognition and intuition, structure and chaos, figuration and abstraction. Coming from different backgrounds in the field of performing arts, Jenny Helene Wübbe & Anouk van der Voet (Hamburg, DE/Amsterdam, NL) met some years ago in Berlin through their shared passion for dance and movement. Since then, they are connected through a deep friendship as well as creative collaborations.
