Inscribing the Body

In a world shaped by ideals and normalized body images, “Inscribing the Body” draws on Roland Barthes’ concept of Écrire le corps to question the body as an idealized form.
The exhibition explores the body as an invisible threshold — between norm and trauma, Western order and periphery, smooth surface and entangled interior.
Visitors are invited to reimagine the body through acts of writing and overwriting. Painting, photography, and language open spaces where vulnerability, emotion, and resistance intersect. Here, identity is conceived as collective and fluid, constantly shifting through interaction.

Armin Reno Popp Sequeira’s installation Las Chinelas Rosa (Masatepe, Nicaragua) commemorates an enduring friendship between Doña Estabana and Doña Alicia — two women bound by care, storytelling, and memory across generations. Separated by time and misunderstanding, both thinking the other had passed, their reunion unfolds through the delivery of long-lost messages.

Joana Dold’s participatory stations, featuring essay fragments all beginning with the sentence “One day, I made this out of my body,” invite visitors to intervene by stamping, layering, and overwriting a painting, combining language and paintwork.

Berlin-based photographer Alicia Diefenbach examines intimacy and counterculture through analog imagery influenced by punk, activism, and urban resistance. Her work captures tensions between transient moments and stylized editorials, merging fashion, identity, and attitude.

How do we rewrite bodies?
“Écrire le corps - Inscribing the Body” opens a space of reflection for transcultural narratives — inviting us to move beyond the visible surface and to reimagine the body as a site of constant rewriting.
