“A color is less a natural phenomenon than a multifaceted cultural construct that defies any generalization and, ultimately, any analysis,” writes color historian Michel Postreau.

The effect of colors is idiosyncratic; it is not hard-wired into the viewer’s brain, and depends as much on individual socialization as on the cultural, political, and historical context.

There are good and bad colors, as everyone knows. In the color world of young Art Brut artist and exhibition curator Luke Velten—inspired by Johannes Itten—blue represents good energy. It is the calm force that propels us forward: the infinite ocean, the German autobahn. Orange, on the other hand, is the evil energy of toxic masculinity, a testosterone-fueled sugar high, the complexion of Donald Trump. The exhibition Not Orange (Nicht Orange) at the White Cube of the von Foerster Collection, Britz branch, explores these floating and migrating aspects and emotions of the theme of color through 14 artistic works. It is curated by orange-hater Luke Velten with the support of the New Britz Connection. An exhibition in many vibrant colors—just not orange. Or so we’ll see…
