3 July 2026 19:00 – 5 July 2026 19:00
The Shapes of Sugar is both a personal journey and a visual inquiry: it reflects on colonial heritage, ancestral memory, and the construction of self through practice. I am Franco-Mauritian. I grew up with my French family and never felt connected to my Mauritian roots. When I began working with sugar, exploring its materiality and possibilities, I discovered that this practice became a way to reconnect with Mauritius, its history, culture, and the parts of my heritage I had long felt distant from. Mastering the technique of sugar sculpture required time, attention, curiosity, and patience. In learning to shape and control this fragile, elusive material, I also began to confront and understand the blurred, unknown parts of my origins

Biography

Maelys Venkiah

I am a Franco-Maurician designer of the vulnerable and sensitive. Working with ephemeral and intangible materials, I combine edible materials with personal and communal stories and archives. Through edible materials, I explore how meaning can be carried, experimenting with alternative ways to share, pass down, and experience heritage and intimate narratives.
