TRANSIT

Elena Walch

4 July 2026 12:00 – 5 July 2026 18:00
“TRANSIT” is a series of paintings that engages with themes of transformation, identity, and belonging.
The term transit refers to the act of passing through or crossing a place—a movement between two states, between departure and arrival. For me, it symbolizes gender identity, queer existence, and shared community.
The works reflect a process of becoming: the fluid, uncertain, and unpredictable nature of change, as well as the connective aspect of transition. Transit is not a destination but a state of in-between—a zone in which the self remains open and continuously reshapes itself.
The series understands itself as a visual narrative about transformation and community. It asks how belonging is formed when identity is not fixed but fluid. The works invite viewers to perceive transformation as a possibility—as a way of rediscovering oneself and others. Beauty lies in the richness of what is not fixed or predetermined.
The paintings are created on untreated cotton fabric, whose openness is an essential part of the concept. The material breathes, absorbs, and allows the pigments to spread. It responds directly to the movement of the colors. This creates a field of tension between control and letting go. The surface remains permeable, vulnerable, almost bodily. Transparent layers, earthy tones, and spontaneous lines reflect the unstable, the soft, and the raw—qualities that, within a queer understanding of the self, exist not as contradictions but as possibilities.
In this way, the canvas becomes a place of transition: between body and mind, between visibility and sensation, between what the world perceives and what pulses beneath it.
