3 July 2026 19:00–22:00
zwischenr a u m is a performative sound installation by the collective zwischenraum that explores staircases as places of transition—between outside and inside, public and private, movement and stillness. Staircases are more than just connections: they structure pathways, create proximity or distance, mark boundaries, and simultaneously make them permeable.

The work originates from field recordings of people from Neukölln. Conversations, fragments of voices, breath, pauses, and ambient sounds are processed into a multi-layered sound composition. Memories, thoughts, and everyday moments from the neighborhood overlap to form an acoustic tapestry that oscillates between intimacy and publicity, proximity and distance.

The staircase itself becomes the installation's resonating chamber. Its landings open up different sonic layers where architecture, sound, and social dynamics converge. The performers provide targeted performative impulses, subtly drawing attention to these fields of tension.

zwischenr a u m makes the staircase a tangible social, acoustic, and spatial interstitial space, exploring how belonging, demarcation, and encounter continually emerge anew in such transitional zones.

Biography

kollektiv zwischenraum

The collective zwischenraum works interdisciplinarily at the intersection of music, performance, and space. At its core are artistic processes that make transitions, encounters, and temporary constellations tangible. zwischenraum is interested in the in-between: between sound and silence, movement and stillness, audience and performers. The works are often site-specific and actively incorporate architectural, social, and acoustic conditions. Through collaborative processes, the participants develop performative formats, installations, and sound art projects that challenge existing perceptual habits and open up new perspectives on everyday spaces. zwischenraum understands art as an open process and an invitation to shared experience.
