The MINTgreen Classroom at Tempelhofer Feld is an open experiential space where artistic practice, nature education, and urban space converge. Tempelhofer Feld—once an airport, now a public open space—is itself a place of transition where nature and the city meet directly. It is precisely at this intersection that the Green Classroom functions as an experimental space for learning and encounter.
For this year’s edition of the 48h Neukölln art festival, we are exploring the tension between openness and separation, as well as between freedom and the need for protection. Leading up to the festival weekend, artists Catherine Rose Evans, Michaela Zimmer, Ulrika Segerberg, and Hildegard Skowasch have been invited to visit the MINTgreen Classroom during class hours and, together with the children in workshops, artistically explore the boundaries of “outside and inside.” The classroom temporarily becomes a laboratory for shared experiences and questions about community, belonging, and the future.
Catherine Rose Evans introduces the students to her project 'Tools for Direct Democratic Action', in which ordinary gardening tools become instruments for future challenges. Together with the children, she develops tools for the problems of the future, which are activated performatively during the festival. Michaela Zimmer introduces the children to her portable sculptures made from paintings and works with the kids to create their own protective covers. Ulrika Segerberg and Hildegard Skowasch explore the formal language of large-format flags addressing questions of boundaries, protection, marking, and identity.
In collaboration with the children, artworks, temporary interventions, and performances are created that, during the festival weekend, invite visitors as well as passersby to rethink the boundaries between “outside” and “inside.”
