In 2025, a building on the grounds of the Hermann-Sander Elementary School's school garden was converted into a chicken coop through a collaborative effort. This collaboration between children, parents, educators, teachers, and neighbors created a space that combines practical care with collective learning.
Caring for the animals provided the children with direct experiences of responsibility, dependence, and community. Daily interaction with the animals thus became a social and aesthetic learning environment.
The artwork and documentation created during this process were first exhibited at the 2025 art festival. They form the basis for further artistic exploration in 2026, which will continue to examine questions of care, community, and awareness.
The project was made possible by "Grün macht Schule" (Green Makes School) – an advisory center for ecological and child-friendly schoolyard design – and the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family.
