“ImPuls OutPut” is a solo taiko performance that emerges from an inner, almost silent pulse. It begins with the performer’s own heartbeat—subdued, focused, and inward-turned. From this stillness, a rhythm slowly develops, gaining strength, intensifying, and finally bursting outward.

Simono plays two drums: an analog taiko and an electronic e-taiko. The direct, raw sound meets a filtered, amplified sound—two layers that initially approach each other cautiously and increasingly intertwine as the performance progresses. This creates a tension between intimacy and eruption.

Simono understands taiko as a physical expression of inner energy (Ki). Movement, breath, and sound are closely intertwined. What begins within—emotions, thoughts, tensions—becomes visible and audible step by step, until it discharges into an expressive, powerful presence.

Simono combines traditional elements such as katas with influences from minimalist and experimental music, techno, and visual art. Universal codes such as Morse code are also incorporated. This gives rise to a personal form that is not based on imitation, but on a unique, personal engagement with Taiko.

The performance invites the audience to join this experimental journey: from a quiet inner pulse toward a shared, intense experience that unites performer and audience in a final, powerful moment.

Biography

Simono

Simono, audiovisual artist

Before, during, and after her studies in visual communication at the HDK (UdK), Simono was drawn to feminist, queer, and alternative projects, to squats and raw studios, to experience vibrant and experimental art. Her work focuses on the human figure, anatomy, and sound, utilizing drawing, objects, laser cutting, and audiovisual media.

Over the years, she has discovered a passion for sounds, minimalist music, and Japanese taiko. As a member of the Iki Iki Taiko ensemble for several years now, she seeks her own approach to the possibilities of taiko in a minimalist, meditative, and expressive manner, live or diigital.

She lives and works in her own studio in Berlin.
