In the project Lightworkers, Piotr Lewandowski deconstructs the Western obsession with light as a tool of intellectual distance, a sun-driven reason that seeks to dominate and categorize from a safe distance. Instead, the artist proposes light as a visceral, bodily emission.
The heart of the exhibition is a spatialized document-camera performance, where light is no longer a distant celestial body but a medium emerging from the performers' fingertips and diffusing across their skin. It acts as a bridge, a fluid formation that replaces traditional communication with a sensory, non-linear presence. By making their own essence visible, the performers transform the human body into a permeable structure where the biological interior spills into the social exterior, turning the skin not into a boundary, but into a site of constant negotiation and storytelling.
This dissolution of opposites is further explored through interactive objects that deepen the viewer's immersion and challenge the rigidity of space. The installation 400 lux consists of a circular light object that reacts to the intensity of sound within the gallery. The collective presence of the audience, their whispers, breaths, and shared movements, directly dictates the luminosity of the environment, creating a landscape where individual and collective identities overlap and blur. In Lightworkers, the Platonic myth is inverted: truth is not found by escaping the cave toward an external sun, but by recognizing the light generated within the proximity of bodies. The project invites the audience into a space of causality and shared responsibility, where boundaries are not restrictions but open spaces of possibility. By experiencing the touch of light, the viewer becomes part of a fluid transition between the self and the world, proving that identity is not a fixed essence but a process of constant re-enchantment in the presence of another.

Biography

Piotr Lewandowski

Piotr Lewandowski - visual artist who works with photography, video, installation, and performance. Rooted in autobiographical experiences and a queer sensibility, his works explore the interplay between body and space. He uses movement and its blockages as a metaphor for agency and often conceives of the moving image as a dense, sculptural form. Collaboration is at the heart of his practice—every action is constructed as a collective, activating process. He holds degrees in media art (ASP Warsaw) and photography (UAP Poznań) and is currently studying artistic research in Warsaw. In addition to his artistic work, he serves as an art educator at the Museum of Modern Art (MSN) in Warsaw. He lives and works in Warsaw.
