My sculpture “Sansibar” consists of many different collected everyday objects, a suitcase filled with sand, boxing gloves, a Sansibar sign, and various beach and hygiene items.
The work is intended to be interpreted associatively, without accompanying text. Due to the “Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty,” Zanzibar never became a German colony. However, if you search for “Zanzibar” on the internet today, you will find advertisements from German tourism companies promoting trips to Zanzibar even before the Wikipedia entry. Tourism is often seen today as a form of neocolonialism. Colonial violence is unlikely to be seen by the tourists. The boxing gloves, however, would be more likely to be packed for leisure and holiday activities.

Biography

Heinrich Hochmuth

In my artistic practice, I am interested in all materials that have a relevant symbolic or direct meaning for me. I am primarily interested in things that trigger a repulsive reaction in me, that cause some sort of dissonance within me. I am always driven to understand what is going on in the minds of others, whether they perceive the same contradictions as I do in their environment, and how they interpret them.
The artistic medium as such is rather secondary for me; I think what is more important is its use, presentation, and context.
I enjoy art, that breaks out of the precisely defined framework of the gallery, the museum, the stage; appropriates public space; and thus exposes people to itself without asking for permission.
