The “WildCityFrequencies” project by the artist collective Wilde Kehlen (Wild Throats)

CityWildFrequencies explores Berlin as an urban borderland where human, animal, and infrastructural voices converge. While non-human beings flee the intensively cultivated surrounding countryside, new forms of coexistence, conflict, and symbiosis emerge within cities. Despite the loss of many open spaces and gentrification, Berlin is a space where the boundaries between nature and culture, inside and outside, control and wildness are constantly shifting.

Wilde Kehlen is an artistic research project, running since 2024, that makes these boundary shifts tangible through sound, literature, and visual art. “Wild Throats” refers to all vocal apparatuses of a shared inhabited space: human and animal voices, infrastructural noises, the boombox at Kottbusser Tor, skylarks at Tempelhofer Feld, street intersections, nightingales in backyards, starlings at Alexanderplatz, ventilation shafts, and acoustic simulations, whether from DJs or blackbirds. These voices are collected, analyzed, distorted, and transformed into new artistic constellations.

As part of the 48 Hours Neukölln festival, we are planning an exhibition of paintings, photographs, videos, graphics, and sound installations in a space in Neukölln. In addition, performances will take place on all three festival days, each with a different focus: from sound-based improvisations and musical-literary formats to performative readings. The relationship between inside and outside will be deliberately varied—sounds of the urban space will be brought into the exhibition space, and boundaries between stage, audience, and surroundings will be opened up.

StadtWildFrequenzen invites visitors to hear Neukölln anew: as a permeable resonating chamber where ecological, social, and cultural boundaries do not separate but overlap and create something new.
